About Bill Hoopes

Bill Hoopes is an economics honors graduate of the Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio.

After early experience in retail and industrial sales, Bill gained important experience in consumer lawn products sales with the Scotts Company. As Sales Training Manager, Bill applied his experience to teaching and coaching the field organization.

In the mid-1980's, Bill managed Scotts customer base as Manager of Scotts prestigious STI (Scotts Training Institute) in Marysville, Ohio. STI trained and prepared Scotts major outlets in lawn product sales. Bill held Training seminars across the country and at Scotts' research headquarters in Ohio and provided homeowner clinics in all major US cities.

In addition to managing the retailer training function, Bill also headed up and expanded the PTI (Professional Turf Institute), Scotts unique golf course training division. Bill and his team of instructors conducted technical seminars for top golf superintendents nationally and in Canada. Hoopes' original and creative training programs include not only agronomic topics but crew leadership, effective communications, safety and environmental stewardship as well.

In 1985, Hoopes refocused his training on the growing lawn care service business as Director of Training and key member of the Barefoot Grass Lawn Service management team. By the early 90's, Barefoot grew to become the nations second largest lawn service. Bill developed original management and 'front line' training programs for functional areas of the company, from sales and technical to customer service and communications.

Upon the sales of Barefoot Grass in 1997, Bill became Manager of Regulatory Affairs for the Consumer Services Division of Barefoot's new owners, ServiceMaster Corporation. In late 1997, driven by his ongoing love for training, Bill joined former Barefoot Grass management to help form and launch Scotts LawnService.

In August 2005, Bill decided to 'go it alone' and established "Grass Roots Training", an owner operated training and consulting business in Delaware, Ohio. In this new venture, Hoopes will apply his over 20 years of lawn service experience to the training and development of growing small businesses in the service industry.
